We've been talking to Oliver (ogra) about this on IRC, he said that Canonical is fine with whatever we plan and do, he said that it's basically acknowledged that Edubuntu is a community project at the moment. It wasn't exactly a formal statement, but it's go-ahead from a Canonical employee who has always been involved with Edubuntu so can accept that and move on.
