indeed you dont do that in the client chroot ;)
sudo update-alternatives --config x-session-manager
is the right command ;)
or create a ~/.xsession file for the user that runs the command to start
kde (dunno how thats called nowadays) if you dotn wannt it systemwide.

Thanks for the suggestion. All my users log in to the main machine using GDM
and set KDE as their prefered desktop. No-one uses Gnome on the main machine.
Is this still the command I need to to use, or is something being missed here?
