I wouldn't recommend this.  If she needs extra codecs, then the first thing
to try is to add the Ubuntu dapper multiverse repository and install the
packages gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse
and w32codecs.  This should allow totem and mplayer to play most things.
