The "alsaconf" utility is very helpful in configuring sound cards.  I think
you can just apt-get install alsa-utils to get this.

Could you reply with the following:

1. The output of the command:
        cat /proc/asound/cards

2. The output of the command
        lspci -v

3. What version of Ubuntu/Edubuntu did you install?
