It was a Feisty clean install and now a clean Gusty beta install, but
I've got a separate /home partition.
Recently I renamed my personnal folder to get rid of all .gconf and .*.

Having sounds troubles on Feisty I tried to switch from
pulseaudio-esound-compat to esound and reverse.

But in Gusty, I recently found a .esd_auth file : so there is some app
generating that file, and sometime it is generated with owner "root" and
I loose sound until I "sudo rm ./.esd_auth".

This time Desktop sounds are ok but flash-plugin-nonfree doesn't make any sound
if I try to see a Youtube video (either on the server or on a thin client).

Thank's for your explaination about how sound works.

François
