Just suggestions:

Sounds like Thunderbird saves state information in a file in the
user's home directory.  In my home directory, it is
.mozilla-thunderbird/fakoojmj.default/localstore.rdf  I think the
fakoojmj part of the name is variable.

Renaming that file makes Thunderbird open in the default view.  I also
notice a .mozilla-thunderbird/fakoojmj.default/lock symbolic link
while Thunderbird is open.  That may be the culprit as well.
