This really depends on your work load. When it comes to performance tuning make no assumptions. Every environment is different.
I would suggest invest your time in collecting some metrics. Set up cacti and graph your switch ping latency, server ram usage, cpu and diskio. You should then be able to spot the bottleneck. And forecast what will be a bottleneck as you expand.
