Hi Jane, I'm not from the US, but in Germany we've been running a Wikipedia education program targeted at middle and high school teachers and students since 2010. Until the end of 2012, Wikimedia Germany was in charge of the project, since early 2013 we're an independent group of instructors (almost exclusively experienced Wikipedians).
I'm quite familiar with the US education system and I believe that many of our ideas and material could easily be adapted. If you're interested in further information, I'm happy to provide you with an English summary/overview and material.
