INTERNET UNAFFECTED BY POWER FAILURE
According to Keynote Systems, which tracks performance of the Internet,
the power outage affecting parts of the northeastern United States and
Canada has not affected the Internet. A statement from Keynote Systems
noted that as of Thursday afternoon the Internet and all major U.S. Web
sites were performing normally. Cell phone call volume was extremely
high, however, causing congestion on networks that have been able to
keep operating on back-up power from generators. Sprint and Verizon
advised customers to be patient and indicated that some calls to the
east coast might be blocked to ensure availability for emergency calls.

MOVIE STUDIOS, MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT FIGHT DVD PIRACY
A series of raids conducted by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) and
Malaysian law-enforcement officials has resulted in the arrests of nine
individuals accused of selling pirated movies over the Internet. In
addition to the arrests, the raids led to the seizure of more than
30,000 copies of pirated movies. According to Ken Jacobsen of the MPA,
a significant portion of pirated discs worldwide come from a small
number of organizations in Malaysia and Russia. Jacobsen said his
group's efforts are focused on Internet sales, where most of the
market has gone since crackdowns on illegal discs sold on the streets
or in malls. The MPA uses a program called Ranger to locate Web sites
that are selling illegal copies of movies on the Internet. Jacobsen
said the seizure in Malaysia is the MPA's largest single seizure of
pirated movies.

Hewlett-Packard has won a civil judgment of $1.8 million against a
company called S-Systems that tried to resell equipment bought under an

owner of S-Systems, used educational discounts to buy $5.7 million of
hardware from Compaq Computer for $3.1, saying that the equipment was
going to Case Western Reserve University. Sallee then attempted to
resell the equipment. (Hewlett-Packard purchased Compaq Computer in May
2002.) Sallee has pleaded guilty to criminal mail fraud for his part in

TEEN HACKER CHOOSES EDUCATION OVER EMPLOYMENT
Eighteen-year-old Ankit Fadia, author of "The Unofficial Guide to
Ethical Hacking," has decided to attend Stanford University in the fall
rather than accept any of numerous offers for employment. Fadia wrote
his book on hacking two years ago and quickly became something of a
celebrity among computer security professionals. Total sales for the
book are estimated at close to 100,000, and Fadia has since written two
more books. Fadia is regarded as a prodigy with computers and systems,
and material for his book came from long hours of "ethical hacking," in
which he would break into Web sites and then tell the "victims" about
their sites' weaknesses. Fadia said he would like to start his own
network security company after he completes his education.
