Actually edX supports Matlab problems to some point: take a look 
there https://openedx.atlassian.net/wiki/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=17727496. 
You can for sure look at the code for details, but it should be 
documentation somewhere. I'm bit surprised that Matlab problem types not 
listed 
here: 
http://edx.readthedocs.io/projects/edx-partner-course-staff/en/latest/exercises_tools/create_exercises_and_tools.html
