Hi Jan,

I cannot speak for WMF Engineering, but if you are looking for an (open source) 
learning platform that could be integrated with MediaWiki (either in terms of 
using data from the MediaWiki API or databases or accessing Wikimedia user 
credentials), you should consider if an application installed on Labs and using 
OAuth for authentication/authorization [1] would meet your needs.
