Thanks for all the replies, I've been delayed getting back to this but I've now got a bootable USB stick (I loaded osol-0811.iso onto it using the usbgen and usbcopy scripts on another PC running OpenSolaris).
When I boot the laptop from the USB stick with the default grub option it asks me for keyboard layout and language. Then the 'opensolaris console login:' prompt appears and then it looks like the X server tries to start (the screen clears and flickers before returning to the text console, it does this a couple of times). I think this is where I got stuck before. Thanks to instructions from Ohta-san (and Sayama-san in turn) I fixed this (Xorg -configure, etc.) I've installed the atge driver so the wired network is now working, and I've added the 945GME driver. The final thing I need to do is change the screen resolution. Do I need to fiddle with xorg.conf to do this or is there another way?
