yes, I agree that this would have a higher value, at least for all my use-cases.
So I'd suggest to drop the current patch in favor of that new functionality.

How about the following interface?

$ bg_printenv --current --ustate
ustate:           0 (OK)

$ bg_printenv --current --ustate --raw
0
