sorry :)

the iso should install itself the smp kernel if the installer finds more
than 1 cpu. (counts the lines of /proc/cpuinfo containing 'processor')
unfortunately, the installer sees only 1 processor as tried today with a
pentium d. i had no smp system during development, so i was not able to
test it.
i am unsure if this happens because the installer kernel is not an smp
kernel. i assumed cpuinfo should contain all processors regardless of
the kernel used.
need to debug this :/

yes. if you use the smp kernel you need to use also the smp kernel
modules (if needed), otherwise modprobe will not find any module.
