Hi all,

I'm having some problems with my Endian install.

Basically, I was running it on an old piece of hardware as a test, and now
that it has become critical to our network, I decided to use some new
hardware.

I've just purchased a Dell C521 (3200+ Athlon 64 with 1Gb RAM) and a Le Wiz
PCIE x4 Quad Port Low Profile Gigabit network card.

I was pleased to see that the card was recognised straight away by the
drivers that shipped with Endian.

It was an e1000 driver - which is essentially a the Intel PRO/1000 PT Quad
Port Low Profile Server Adapter.

Endian seemed to run fine until after a few bits of configuration, I plugged
a cable into the new card.

After several ping time-outs, I got 4 replies, a load more time-outs and
then the system hung.

I tried this a few times, with similar results.

I checked on modinfo e1000, and found that the drivers for the card are a
bit out of date - version 7.0.33, when the one that shipped with the device
is 7.3.20.

I also noticed that the lines in \var\log\messages regarding finding the
card state:

Kernel: e1000: 0000:04.01.0: e1000_probe: (PCI-X:100MHz:64 bit)
00:12:32:00:14:da

Kernel: e1000: eth1: e1000_probe: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection

Each of the other ports has a related kernel message also.

The reason this makes me wonder is that it claims the card is PCI-X, when
it's actually PCIE.

I'm guessing this could cause the problems I'm seeing.

So, I need to know how best to go about installing the latest drivers.

They are available as a tar.gz from Sourceforge.

I assume this means I have to make/make install them, which means using the
developer edition.

Can I compile them on the developer edition and then copy the kernel module
back to the other machine, or will I have to stay using the developer
version?

How do I tell it to load a specific kernel module at boot time if I use the
non-developer edition.

Can I build it on any chip architecture from the developer edition, or does
it have to be running on the same type of processor to work properly?

Can anyone help with these questions?

Cheers,

Jx
