Many nix distros have issues with the controllers of some
mainboards. Does yours have only one pata connector?
And many people blame sata, but Ive seen some boards
successfully make sata seem like pata or scsi devices to nix
distros.
One thing that typically does not work the built in raid.
Nix distros often see raid controllers that work in Windows
as a regular drive controller, and it sees all the drives
attached as individual drives, rather than as one raid
volume. Even after youve initialized the drives as a raid
set in the bios.
The trick is to use a raid controller that doesnt require
drivers to make work, and thats usually limited to just a
few, and are the more expensive kind...

Problem:
Whether i use both hd's for a raid 1 or each individually,
it seems to get
stuck at the following step:
"Successfully wrote new partion table"
"Re-reading the partioning table ..."
Nothing happens, I left it at this stage for about an hour
when testing each
hd and with both enabled for raid1
(Keyboard does not lock up)
Hardware:
Dell Optiplex 320 N Series
Intel Pentium D 3.0 GHz
1Gig Ram
1ea Sata 160Gig HD - disabled
1ea PATA(IDE) 100Gig HD - enabled
I have had problems with SATA hard disks on several
machines. Remove the SATA disk and make a test. Then switch
the PATA with the SATA and make another test.
