using either a Via VT6120 rev42 or a realtek rtl8139 rev10, ping times
(obtained from EFW console) spike from roughly 25ms to google to around
300-500ms for extended periods of time, even with all incoming and outgoing
traffic from green disabled.

DNS proxy is not transparent, the only running services are cron, DHCP, DNS
proxy, logging and kernel logging, SSH and the web server. CPU usage is
never above 10% (according to graphs for day/week), memory usage hasn't been
over 36% (512 meg total).

Issue does not occur when a box is connected directly to the cable modem.
Cheaper interfaces usually have small or no buffers. It is usually better to stick with better cards like 3com or Intel.
