Luego de infructuosos intentos de configuración, desintalé todas las aplicaciones e instalé todo el paquete XAMPP 1.53 Luego no tuve problemas, me inclino a pensar que hay alguna incompatibildad entre MySQL y algunas de las librerÃas de PHP o PEAR. Gracias a todos por la ayuda. Solo me resta configurar el resto, ya está corriendo.
