My gut level impression as well.

One of the things to remember, though, is that when two beans are
deployed in the same container (which happens a lot in our
applications), most good container vendors will optimize the calls
between their remote interfaces such that they're just local method
calls.  So in some ways some of the stuff it *looks* like you're
sacrificing in terms of performance etc. you're really just deferring to
the container, whose vendor's job it is to ensure is as fast as
possible.
