U could also try out open source ides ecllipse or netbeans which have intelligent code suggestion, refactoring etc even auto java documentation.
Ecclipse supports individual file compilation.

IDEA has excellent code refactoring features, very intelligent code
suggestion features and an excellent "live template" system. This is what
you are really paying for with idea.
If you don't want/need these features, or don't want to pay for them (I
couldn't live without it now, idea rocks!), then just use forte or
JBuilder foundation (or whatever it's called now), or stay on the idea
EAP.
