so in 1904, we'll come back to this Sriram and see how our guesses
faired the test of time. until then i guess we'll keep doing variations of
same thing all over again. (apologies Yogi)
it'll be a long time before we see widespread inter-business use of
business components. i do believe that some companies will continue on this
path, and have "success" in the process (have any of our systems ever
failed?) but we're going to have to get alot smarter about things before
that happens (no, i don't believe this is a technology problem).
one interesting development over the last couple years is the move
to outsourcing computing in total. this presents real possibilities for
reusable business components for at least three reasons: 1) outsourcers need
to allow migration of customers between them - much like ISP's and your long
distance carrier do now 2) oursources will undoubtedly need to be
integrating with each other, in a b2b manner 3) new capabilities need to be
developed literally overnight to service new customer requirements.
there are two common approaches to providing this capability today:
1) use ERP systems 2) build/buy/merge various functionality available in the
market today. when we get smart enough to build real business components,
the possibilities become very interesting.
thanks for all the feedback on this. the discussion has been...
confirming.
seeya,
jim
