The advantage this gives is that you are not tied to IIOP, you could chuck the
'standard' XML
request over HTTP, RMI maybe even DCOM.
The disadvantage is speed due to, as you say, the verbosity of the call, but
when we looked at
this system we experimented with keeping the number of calls between client and
server coarser
grained to alleviate some of this overhead.
