I wasn't aware that CloudScape is free. Is this the case, or did you really
mean it when you said, "fee Java RDMS"?
MySQL (http://www.mysql.org/) is a free non-Java RDMS that has a free Java
JDBC driver.
InstantDB (http://www.instantdb.co.uk/) is a 100% Java RDMS that is free for
non-commercial applications. I have used it successfully in a networked,
multiuser environment by coupling the InstantDB JDBC driver with the
RMI-based JDBC driver (http://dyade.inrialpes.fr/membres/gibello).
Inprise (http://www.inprise.com/) has introduced the JDataStore that is an
all Java SQL compliant RDMS. It supports replication also. It is definitely
not free.
Pointbase (http://www.pointbase.com/) has a free developer version of their
all-Java database, that will hold up to 5MB of information. I must give them
maximum praise for releasing a free, developer license that doesn't expire.
WebLogic, Inprise, GemStone, hell...all of you guys (you know who you are)
could take a lesson on developer marketing from these guys!
Cloudscape (http://www.cloudscape.com/) has a free for *qualified* ISV
program. They will give you a free copy as long as you meet the criteria
they desire. I imagine that they are counting on you (or your customers)
needing a license to use the software when it ships.
