I do agree with data stored in files (on the O/S) it is quite difficult for the
container to manage the
state synchronisation.

However, if you want to use a data store which is *not* usually supported by
Enterprise JavaBeans container
you have to rely on BMPs or change to a data store supported by EJB container.
BMP is also an alternative
to access legacy or proprietary data store or db.
