There are tools that help with this. For example one of our partners, Verve
http://www.verveinc.com/, provides a "workflow" engine for sequencing
multi-step business transactions. I believe it supports various application
servers as well.

This corresponds to the Command pattern suggested by Mr. Frentess. If the
work flows are complex and varied, having a tools that does the state
machine aspects for you can be a huge win.
