IMHO, to use UML with EJB, you'll need to define some stereotypes to
represent Home and Remote Interfaces and Beans in a meaningful way. UML
components do not map trivially to EJBs. On the other hand, UML is used
widely nowadays, so it's perhaps the best choice, nevertheless. After all,
the point of formal modeling is communication.

Concerning a UML "modeling" tool, I'd strongly recommend to start with
Together/J. Only if you find that this isn't enough and you need even more
formal ways to model your design, I would switch to tools like Rose or
Paradigm Plus.
