Thanx to all for a quick response
Non-commercial use was quite a big thing to miss (he he !)
My next question is then
What is the best App server on the market based on:
functionality provided
value for money
robustness
reliability
The general opinion for the mailing list seems to be the Orion server.
www.flashline.com lists all the main contenders and I have read the sales
pitch at each vendors site. However I would like to get some opinions of
real users. Dig out the war stories, workarounds and compromises.
I have looked at.
Orion
Weblogic
Silver stream
ATG Dynamo
Websphere (ibm)
NAS
Secant
Opinions please !!!

The vendor specific app servers provide many features above and beyond the
J2EE, such as in the areas of integration and performance. The vendors will
have their own implementations of say RMI, JTS and so on which provide far
superior performance to some of the standard J2EE libraries. I believe some
of the J2EE libraries serve as a reference implementation only, which the
vendors have strongly taken to optimising.
There are also issues regarding hooks that the vendors supply for some
"legacy" integation and improved persistence support for certain platforms.
Take a look at WebLogic's integration with TopLink for Object-Relational
mapping and so on. There would also be hooks for perhaps Tuxedo, MQSeries
and so on for JMS integation to "legacy" streams.
The vendors will also provide such features as failover, load balancing and
seemless replication between various instances of the app server, and these
would be proprietary implementations (albeit independent of your bean
implementation say). Distributed transaction processing will also be
provided.
The market for app servers goes well beyond the J2EE
