Hm, I don't see any immediate problems with this. As always, testing in
practice is the only way to know for sure.

Is there any particular aspect of this that you think may be impacting
performance?

Also, it's hard to do things without actually doing them. If you know
what I mean. The trick I mentioned removes a lot of computation if you
can live with the semi-dynamic aspect, but things like these are hard to
optimize away.
