I don't know of any vendors that support true J2EE connectors.

I don't have an extremely wide range with experience with all the
various app servers, but I can speak about the ones I've had some
experience with or knowledge about.

WebLogic has connectors that hook into their Enterprise Server
product.  I believe it is implemented as an outside service
(outside the EJB container).  The connectors are installed in
this service and invoked by calling the service.

IBM has a whole lot of write ups on their web site about
connectors and their WebSphere product (in its various forms).  I
believe they were very involved in the J2EE connector spec, so I
wouldn't be surprised if their connectors look a bit like J2EE
connectors (or vice versa).

My understanding, via colleagues, is that many, if not most, app
servers provide some way to interface to EISs.  My impression is
that EIS connectors are, as you say, a proprietary phenomenon at
this time.
