We're using MS SQL 6.5 as well, and we use a JDBC driver from Weblogic that is a
type 4 (100% java).
We've had no problems with it, and our app is in production on an EJB server
(Novera).
Here is their URL: http://www.beasys.com/products/weblogic/drivers.html

Subject: Looking for JDBC Driver
Looking for a driver to interface with MS/SQL 6.5 I know it is not a
popular choice, but one that was made before my time and I need to work
with it. Any ideas? Does one ship with SQL Server that is usable? Any
available for download?
Thanks,
John
