An application server supports transactions across JDBC connections.
Entity beans use that, but they are not the only way by which you
implement transactions.
Goes without saying that I would recommend getting an EJB server.

The transaction will be commited when the client closes it, if it's a
client managed transaction, or when you return from the method call if
it's a server managed transaction.
Typically two transactions will not work on the same bean at a given
time (unless you make them), and the EJB server takes care to coordinate
this synchronized access, as well as save the bean when the transaction
commits.
