IBM's JVMs don't match with Sun's. They're pretty honest about this from the
outset. IBM's 1.1.6 for instance, did, I believe, everything 1.1.7b does. They
typically lag as they want their JVMs to be better. Of course, anybody who's
looked at 1.1.7 vs. 1.1.7b can understand the dramatic differences in garbage
collection, for instance. Of course, I really would like a newer version which
does include things such as References, Collections, etc.

IBM seems to think that 1.2 is not stable (I believe they are alone in
stating this). They very strongly want you to run their JVM, which I
think is at 1.1.8. One of their sales reps also mentioned to us
something very vague and disturbing about how, see, it was OK that we
needed 1.2 because with WebSphere, see, they had taken some features
from the 1.2 JVM and had added them into the 1.1.8 JVM (or something
like that). Supposedly they have received enough flak for this that
you'll probably see a WebSphere that supports 1.2 soon.
Purely personally (my own opinion etc.), I'd go with a different
application server; I was not impressed with IBM's sales approach or its
technical prowess--surprising, actually, when you consider this is IBM
we're talking about!
Cheers,
Laird
