There is an article on JavaWorld that highlights some of the issues when
selecting an IDE.
http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-03-2000/jw-0324-ide.html.
Asking what is the best IDE will always start a religous war just like
asking what is the best EJB server. What I look for is an open tools api so
that I can plug in my own wizard or script, great productivity support like
code insight (auto completetion, parameter hints), good support for the
latest JDK, support for multiple platforms, good support for the near latest
J2EE specs. I like an IDE that stops me switching between mulitle windows
and applications. I like to see my applet or JSP run within my environment
and not in some separate process, flow; all that context switch degrades my
performance. Personnally the biggest selling point for me, is if its written
in Java; I want to see if Java is really ready for prime time on the client.
The last time I used Visual Age I did not like the fact that it constantly
reminded me of its storage/versioning implementation i.e. I was forced to
view a method at a time. This was a long time ago so maybe things have
greatly improved. I prefer JBuilder 3.5 Enterprise; it suits my way of
working and beliefs (oh the religious aspect coming in again)

I have a lot of respect for both magazines and value their judgement.
kind regards,
