Well, if it comes down to between VCafe and JBuilder, I would say it is a no
contest. JBuilder it is.
Of the big three, VCafe, JBuilder and VAJ, only JBuilder has a runtime which
is 1.1 compliant as IAS is. VCafe is supposed to, but it is beset with
problems.

When it comes to tight integration between app server and IDE, probably VAJ
is the best of the lot. (i.e.) there is no such thing as hot deploy. Once
deployed, you go change the code and save and bang, you are ready to go. In
fact, I frequently keep my test client (generated from VAJ) open and go fix
my bug/change in the code, save and re-test with all of them running.

VAJ vs JBuilder is also interesting with respect to team development. I find
VAJ's repository based approach better for large teams and it's
cross-referencing etc.. has been great and its integration with TeamServer
(envoy) good for large teams.

Thus, if 1.1 compliance is important, go JBuilder. But, if you want a
generic EJB tool, eval both JBuilder and VAJ and depending on your target
app server you will quickly work out which suits you best. It will also be
a matter of personal taste as you will find VAJ different to the regular
file based IDE approach.

I wouldn't touch VCafe Ent with a barge pole. I found it weak and most
irritating, it crashed so often. But, if your target app server is WebLogic,
I expect VCafe with BEA's influence in it now, will come up to speed.
Eventually.

PS: While you are at it, look into "vi/vim" as an editor of choice.
Emacs ^%$$#@!! ;-)
