There is not much difference. You can access the database through session
beans also.The difference lie in the concept of Entity and session beans.
Entity bean represents Nouns in you application domain. Session bean
represents work flow.There is No body to stop you use session bean for say
customer. but then you will loose the benefits of the entity bean that
container provides it automatically.
