second option is better since
1. it's a better model
2. abstraction of EJB classes from client
3. applets doesn't need to be updated if EJB's are changed
4. If using transactions , you may have to worry about latency and
performance issues when
initiating a transaction from applet
5. You will have light weight applet.
That's my 2 cents.
