Maybe I should have asked this question like you did, but... here is
what I found out about JVM's on Linux:

1) JavaSoft's JDK 1.2.2 has a socket bug that will occasionally
unexpectedly crash the JVM.
2) JavaSoft's JDK 1.3 beta-refresh has a memory leak (both with and
without JIT).
3) IBM JDK 1.3 with JIT crashes, without JIT, unexpectedly stops
responding occasionally.
4) Blackdown 1.2.2 has been up and running for 2 days--that's the
longest we've had a JVM live, so it's the only stable one we have found
so far.

Yes, it's slow. We're using the sunwjit right now, but you could try the
javacomp jit from inprise--that might speed things up a little, haven't
tested it yet for speed difference.
