We use a 16-byte (non-DCE) GUID. It is guaranteed to be unique within
a cluster as long as IP addresses are not reused.

Or, you can use a simple counter column in your table that is incremented by 1
for each update (this is not a timestamp but we call it that to avoid having
too many names for the same purpose).
