1)resource-ref defines a resource connection factory reference for your ejb.
2)res-auth indicates if the bean should programatically sign-on to the resource
  manager or whether the container should handle it.
In your case, the resource manager you are using must not be using any kind
of security if all works well when you specify res-auth=application. It is
probably assuming guest and working fine.
