True, and the ejb-link element assures that this can be done
unambiguously.

Sure, JBoss also provide that option. But you're only required to use it
if it can't be done through the ejb-link element. This allow you to
deploy an app without having to have our proprietary jboss.xml at all.
If possible only the ejb-jar.xml file is used. To make it easy to use.

No, to beans in the same application (EAR file). An EAR may contain
several EJB JAR's. See the J2EE specification for details.
