Simple. The mailing list sends the email out to the distribution list with
your email address as the From field. As it should. Thus, when a mailing
list recipient gets your email, either generating an error or sending a
vacation notice, if the response is to the From address you get the reply.
Most mail systems these days should be smart enough to use the Reply-To
address, which is properly set to be the mailing list. In this case, the
mailing list software is usually smart enough to see the error response
and remove the address from the mailing list. Thus, you do not see the
smart mail system replies, only those replying to From.
List subscribers should be considerate enough to special case their vacation
programs to not respond to mailing list messages, and should resubscribe
when an old address is retired.
