Announcing Job Scheduler for Java Version 1.00 Beta 2
Job Scheduler for Java(tm) is a full-featured job scheduling
system written for the Enterprise Java (J2EE) environment. With Job
Scheduler for Java(tm), you can create automated tasks to manage almost
anything within your enterprise, from backing up network drives, to
extracting data from corporate databases, to uploading files to legacy
systems. If you can do it from the command line, you can schedule it
with Job Scheduler for Java(tm).
As a J2EE-compliant application, Job Scheduler for Java(tm) is
independent of the underlying operating environment. This means that a
single scheduling environment can be used to create and manage scheduled
tasks across all the machines in your enterprise, irrespective of
whether they run UNIX or Windows NT.
This portability combined with an easy-to-use GUI interface, and a wide
range of powerful and flexible scheduling options makes Job Scheduler
for Java(tm) the only choice for your enterprise scheduling needs.
*** What's New in Beta 2 ***
Job Scheduler for Java(tm) 1.00 Beta 2 was released on 15 February,
2001.
It contains a number of bug fixes and UI enhancements, and introduces
the following features:
+ Integration with J2EE application security.
+ EJB Tasks for scheduling the execution of business logic in
session beans.
+ An enhanced Job Monitor which allows you to view job execution
history by date or by job.
Other features of Job Scheduler for Java(tm) include:
*** Flexible Job and Task Definitions
+ A job consists of a series of one or more tasks, configured to run
with a given schedule. This enables re-use of common tasks amongst
jobs, without the need to redefine those tasks.
+ Command Tasks enable any operating system command (Windows BAT or
CMD file, UNIX shell script, or any executable) to be run against
any machine on your network.
+ e-Mail Tasks simplify the creation of tasks which can send e-mail
alerts.
+ EJB Tasks allow you to schedule execution of methods on Session
Beans deployed in your enterprise. This powerful feature means
that any functionalty with your existing J2EE applications can be
scheduled for regular execution.
*** Comprehensive Scheduling Options
+ Support for daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly
executions.
+ Can schedule jobs to run at any time of the day, down to the
minute.
+ Support for a "repeat" option with daily jobs, to allow a job to
run, for example, every hour on the hour Monday through Friday.
+ Support for scheduling jobs based on business days. For example,
run a monthly job on the first business day of the month.
+ Scheduling constants such as what constitutes a business day
(default is Monday through Friday) and the start and end dates for
fiscal quarters are customizable via XML.
+ Ability to define the number of retries when a job is not executing
properly, as well as the amount of time to wait between retries.
Additionally, a "no later than" time can be specified, to prevent
jobs from running after a certain time of day.
*** Powerful Holiday Definitions
+ Ability to define both one-time and recurring holidays.
+ Define holidays by date (July 4th, December 25th) or by
"nth-weekday" (4th Thursday of November).
+ Define multiday holidays.
+ Define conditional holidays (December 26th is a holiday it falls on
a Friday).
+ Set holiday policies on a job-by-job basis.
*** Job Dependencies
+ Allows the execution of a job to depend upon the prior successful
completion of one or more other jobs.
*** Administrative Alerts
+ Allows definition of a "failure task" for each job, which will be
run if the job fails to execute properly. This failure task can be
used, for example, to send an administrator an e-mail notifying
them of the failure.
*** J2EE Security Integration
+ Users log in to the security realm enforced by your application
server, thus preventing unauthorized access.
*** Monitoring Capabilities
+ The Job Monitor UI allows job execution histories to be viewed
either by job or by calendar date.
