It is common for EJBs to talk to external systems. Many companies use them to
wrapper existing systems to make them accessible via the Internet.

The soon-to-be standard way of doing this is described in
http://java.sun.com/j2ee/download.html#connectorspec. According to this spec, it
is expected that the external system provider, eg SAP, CICS or Tuxedo would
provide the connector. If you can't wait for that, then write your own
"connector" following as much or as little of the connector architecture as you
wish. Main guideline is try to ensure security and scaleability is handled by
your connector rather than in your EJBs.
