Not necessarily. Some implementations of the JTS (with
1 PC) allow transactions to span multiple databases. The
only caveat is that transaction recovery (provided for
by 2PC) is not available. (e.g. the JTS implementation
bundled with the Borland AppServer 4.x)
But if you really need recovery/management/monitoring
of transactions, then you will need a transaction manager
supporting 2PC.
