It is very much possible - though this depends on
your vendor's implementation.
With (for example) the Borland AppServer, there is
a property called "ignoreColumnsOnInsert" which as
the name suggests allows you to use the "identity"
column property of an rdbms. Other J2EE vendors might
have a similar implementation - but WebLogic 5.x and 6.x
does not offer what you require with CMP if you choose
a EJB 1.1 CMP based implementation.
