As Sache said XML over HTTP is more of a protocol in comparison with RMI or CORBA. You can implement a session EJB and easily make it a web service using open source (Apache AXIS), vendor specific, or 3rd party tools.
This is not a complete comparison, but two things to think about. In comparing XML/HTTP with RMI for example, marhsaling data into and out of XML is more expensive in terms of CPU resources than just sending binary objects around. On the other hand, XML/HTTP will pass through firewalls more easily.
