Tricky question - In general, yes it is required. However, if you don't
care what the primary key is (you don't use it within your application
with some implied meaning) then you can let the container create a class
for you. When the keys are automatically generated, the primary key
class is no longer required.

The class is really simple - create any class you like and just make
sure it is serialisable. Anything after that is up to you. It is
advisable though, to make sure you implement equals() and hashcode()
correctly.
