<shrug> Everybody's entitled to their opinions.
I think in the general sense, though, he's right--HTTP is definitely
approaching the end of its viable lifetime, because we're asking more and
more out of it than it's prepared to deliver. For example: bidirectional
firewall friendly traffic is more or less impossible right now. (I'm not
talking doing two-way data back and forth across the same socket, I'm
talking about people outside the firewall being able to start discussions
with people inside the firewall.) I don't know if this is a fault with HTTP,
though, or with TCP/IP, or with our networking models in general.
FWIW, having known Don now for the better part of 2 years, I can tell you
that he loves to provoke a good argument, because that's how flaws are found
in his (and others') technical stances. But he's also one of the brightest
thinkers I've met in a very, very long time, so I wouldn't be too casual
about dismissing his statements as inaccurate. He's very precise with his
language, and usually that indicates that he's looking to get some very
subtle, but very powerful, points across.
Case in point: two years ago, he came bounding out of his office, yelled
out, "HTTP is the ioctl() of the Web!" and ran back into his office. Took me
a week to figure out what he meant by that, and when I did, I was floored.
Just my $.02.
