Singletons are problematic. They can easily become a performance
bottleneck and also tend to be a single point of failure.

theserverside.com has documented one such strategy (among others) which
generates PKs in a clustered environment. (The strategy was proposed by
Jonathan Weedon (Borland) and generates numbers for PKs, as opposed to
other strategies which generate Strings).
