This was all useful information, some of which I've already read.
Unfortunately, about the only real lead I got out of this was that one
person had the same symptom I did, which was that the "init()" method was
being called, but nothing else, even while logging in to the application.
He ended up writing a "setParent()" method in his subclass, which apparently
worked for him.  In your reply to him, you indicated you didn't need that.
I tried doing what I thought he said he did, but it just created other
problems.  It DID call the function, however, which gave me hope for a
second.

One aspect that confuses me a bit (lots) is the "namespace-access" element
that goes in the "application.xml" file (the same one that contains the
"<user-manager>" element).  In some examples I've seen the
"security-role-mapping" element with no attributes, and sometimes with a
"name" attribute, and sometimes with the value of "<jndi-user-role>".  Is
there something that describes what's going on her, and what it really needs
to be set to?

I also noticed the reference to a "staleness" property for the
DataSourceUserManager class, which I found documented absolutely nowhere.
